Summary: Maintains confidentiality of protected health information (PHI) in accordance with HIPAA, State, and JCAHO standards and regulations. Demonstrates global understanding of the HIS Departmental role in relation to the hospital's Mission. Ability to provide leadership and guidance to the HIS staff. Representation of the hospital in court proceedings and depositions when subpoenaed.

Job Responsibilities: Assists management with day-to-day operations - provides leadership and guidance to HIS staff; serves as backup to the HIS Manager/Supervisor; assists in meeting preparations, including agenda preparation, room scheduling, meeting reminders and minute generation; actively participates in monthly medical record review activities (serves as a member of the team); provides input in the recruitment selection process; assists with payroll activities conducts monthly HIS Department Meetings, when needed; provides assistance to physician's offices, as needed; assists in projects, as needed. System Maintenance - maintains the integrity of the master patient index and facilitate synchronization with other indices throughout the System; performs technical electronic systems maintenance functions including: 1. SoftMed 2. Genesis Birth Certificate System; assists with the implementation of new technologies into the department. Reporting - generates, monitors, and evaluates reports from computer database systems; maintains weekly productivity statistics; complies record review statistics, enters into a spreadsheet, and initiates requests for departmental action plans. Education and Training -provides new employee orientation, training and cross-training; maintains educational documentation for the HIS Department; prepares data and presentations, as needed. Other duties as assigned.

Education: High school graduate or equivalent required. Post-secondary education in an Allied Health program preferred.

Experience: Four years health information management experience or post secondary education with two years HIM experience. Medical terminology with advanced PC skills (MS Office, HIM Systems). Ideal candidate will have the ability to lead and motivate others, contribute to the establishment of procedures, ability to deal with a wide variety of individuals and conflict, and ability to handle work interruptions. Previous customer service experience preferred.

Experience with Birth Certificate completion, 3rd Party Review, Release of Information, and Document Imaging preferred.

Licensure/Certification/Registration: Registered Health Information Technologist (RHIT) and Notary Public preferred.

Physical Requirements: Work environment: Clean, well-lit, comfortable climate, quiet to moderate noise, and prolonged sitting and concentration. Requires extensive sitting and dexterity to perform work on a PC. Requires the ability to walk to other parts of the hospital to attend meetings; must have normal or corrected vision and the ability to verbally communicate to employees and patients.
