Job Details:
Summary: Under the direction of the supervisor and medical director performs staining, tissue sectioning, fixation and embedding techniques. Maintains equipment and records. Troubleshoots procedural and technical problems. Performs data entry of patient and specimen information. Acts as a technical resource for students, trainees and residents.
Job Responsibilities: Transports prepared tissue specimens to the Histology Laboratory and places on the automatic tissue processor. Processes specimens, embeds, and sections embedded specimens using a microtome. Performs routine stains, special stains procedures and enzymehistochemistry stains. Mounts, labels and distributes prepared microscope slides to pathologists or to appropriate areas for interpretation. Prepares reagents buffers, solutions and stains. Replaces reagents and performs daily maintenance on processors. Demonstrates necessary computer skills, has knowledge of computer programs,and performs computer activities in order to effectively perform tests, data entry of patient and specimen information, collect statistics or review patient information. Maintains cleanliness of assigned instrumentation and/or equipment. Performs general maintenance and quality control of equipment. Completes and maintains preventative maintenance and troubleshooting records. May repair instruments/equipment and/or initiates requests for instrument/equipment repair and/or service through vendors and/or Clinical Engineering. Sections frozen tissue specimens using the cryostat when necessary. Files surgical and autopsy blocks as required. Other duties as assigned.
Education: Must be ASCP certification eligible in the field of histology.
Experience: None; one year preferred.
Licensure/Certification/Registration: Must be ASCP certification eligible in the field of histology.
Physical Requirements: Requires manual dexterity and visual acuity when handling specimens, slides and utilizing instrumentation. Ability to safely handle potentially infectious patient specimens, carcinogenic substances, odorous and other hazardous materials to which they may be exposed. Typical physical demands include ability to sit, stand or walk extensively.
