Job Details: Summary: Direct patient care of behavioral health patients under the supervision of the LPN/RN. Facilitates groups as assigned. Monitors and assesses the current mental status and psychiatric symptoms of the behavioral health patients and makes appropriate interventions. Assists in milieu management. Maintains documentation on the patient chart. Job Responsibilities: Provides for Patients' activities of daily living (ADL's). Assists in the examination and treatment of patients under the direction of the Registered Nurse. Identifies physical care and comfort needs of patients, and is able to perform care. Performs routine procedures as designated. Assists with Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) preparation and provides care as designated by the Registered Nurse pre-op and post-op. Assists with patient teaching that enables patient to resume normal daily living functions while hospitalized. Participates in admission process by orienting patient and family members to the milieu. Secures patient belongings and valuables and documents their disposition. Performs ongoing observation of patient's response to illness and treatment which in turn promotes optimal patient outcome. Collects data through observation of the milieu on an ongoing basis. Participates in the identification of patients and signifies others learning needs. Plans and organizes group activities, including but not limited to to recreational, psycho-educational and supportive groups focused on contributing to patients treatment with the milieu. Plans and implements safe milieu interventions consistent with individual patient treatment goals. Assists in the development and the maintenance of an organization/developmental climate in which the needs of Behavioral Health clients are met with warmth respect and responsiveness. Ensure that group therapies occur on schedule and in a timely manner. Carries out specific interventions to assure patient safety, which includes rounds, primary searches and visitor control. Provides safe environment for the patient on an ongoing basis. Demonstrates competency in initiation and utilization of special equipment related to unit. Demonstrates interpersonal communication skills with patients, families and other staff members in an appropriate and acceptable manner. Communicates in a non-judgmental manner, uses effective listening techniques and demonstrates abilities to acknowledge and reflects back to the speaker, paraphrase, and use open-ended questions. Complies with policy and procedure in documentation in multidisciplinary progress notes and in the EPIC system. Documents accurately in EPIC and on all forms available in the department. Accurately monitors and documents special precautions. Reviews patient's EPIC record on a daily basis to determine precautions, activities of daily living, and specimen collection. Documents on patient groups in patient record according to requirements. Documents and describes patient behavior, interventions made and patients response to interventions. Documents important material pertaining to the treatment of the patient. Documents according to Behavioral Health Medicine guidelines. Recognizes signs and symptoms of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) based diagnosis. General knowledge of Modes of Treatment and appropriate interventions. Actively demonstrates skills in a crisis situation. Demonstrates proper application and maintenance of restraints seclusing of population served under the guidance of the RN. Maintains non-violent crisis intervention training and CPR in timely manner. Identifies/utilizes opportunities to update and broaden clinical skills and attends educational in-services voluntarily. Demonstrates willingness to work on other units as needed. Participates in performance organization groups that increase knowledge in field and actively seeks educational opportunities. Assists in learning process of new employees and students. Keeps informed of unit changes by reading communications and attending unit staff meetings. Utilizes appropriate channels of communication to resolve and relay pertinent information. Promotes harmonious relationships through positive attitude within department, other departments, with medical staff, patients and visitors. Holds self and others accountable for assigned responsibilities. Offers constructive ideas for improving department function and patient care program. Behavior reflects acceptance of department/organization decisions and philosophies. Accepts constructive criticism and adapts accordingly. Other duties as assigned. Education: High school diploma or GED required; Associates or Bachelors Degree in Psychology, Sociology, or Behavioral Health field preferred. Demonstration of group facilitation skills, knowledge of psychiatric diagnosis and treatments. Crisis intervention skills. Experience: Two years of experience in Behavioral Medicine/Health Field required. An Associates or Bachelors Degree in Psychology, Sociology or Behavioral Health may substitute for two years Behavioral Medicine/Health experience. As an organization, all employees with patient contact are expected to demonstrate competencies, specific to their job duties, for the following patient population categories: Elderly, Children, Cardiac, Neuro, Surgical, Impaired (Hearing/Visual), Cultural, Age. NOTE: The above stated duties are intended to outline those functions typically performed by individuals assigned to this classification. Licensure/Certification/Registration: NVCI (non-violent crisis intervention) training and CPR required within 90 days from start date of the position. Physical Requirements: Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patient, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination. Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Requires working under stressful conditions and irregular hours. Exposure to communicable diseases and/or body fluids. Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.
