Summary: Provides timely and accurate administrative and clinical data through the accurate assignment of ICD-9-CM and CPT codes, in compliance with regulations and requirements of the Federal Government, State licensing agencies and the hospital’s policies and procedures, to support the hospital’s management planning process and ensure appropriate reimbursement for Inpatient, Observation, Outpatient Surgery and Emergency Department services.

Job Responsibilities: Assigns the correct ICD-9-CM and CPT code to each diagnosis and operative procedure substantiated by documentation contained in the medical record. Maintains 95% accuracy rate in identifying the principal diagnosis, additional diagnoses, principal procedure, additional procedures, DRG and E/M level. Maintains acceptable productivity standards: IP – 3 per hour; BHC – 5 per hour; AMS – 8 per hour; ED – 10 per hour; ED Charging only – 15 per hour; ROP 30 per hour Calculates E/M level and enters along with other charges for ED services and procedures into Invision system. Utilizes the 3M Encoder System for proper coding and ensures that the medical staff document sufficient information for accurate coding and appropriate reimbursement by utilizing clarification form when necessary. Other duties as assigned.

Education: Bachelor's Degree from a four-year college or University in Health Information Management (or a related field), or an Associate's Degree in Health Information Technology (or related field) from an accredited two-year college or technical school, or a Certified Coding Specialist credential.

Experience: Two (2) years of previous experience in a similar capacity preferred. Must have a working knowledge of ICD-9-CM, CPT, UHDDS sequencing, and DRG and outpatient reimbursement schemes.

Licensure/Certification/Registration: Accreditation with the American Health Information Management Association or American Academy of Professional Coders; RHIA, RHIT, or CCS.

Physical Requirements: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally (Occasionally: activity or condition exists up to 1/3 of the time) and/or a negligible amount of force frequently (Frequently: activity or condition exists from 1/3 to 2/3 of the time) to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. • Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time, but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.
