Summary: Performs administrative and technical functions as the Lead Research Monitor in the CCU. Job
Responsibilities: Monitors and cares for animals in the CCU, including basic husbandry, data collection, medical care and administration of prescribed medication. Assists the DVM or PI with diagnostic procedures. Documents all data, required information and notable events. Plans shift coverage for three shifts and oversees personnel on first shift. Trains and orientates new PRN research monitors in the basic theories and techniques used in the CCU. Performs basic administrative duties in the CCU, including preparing the monthly schedule, ordering and stocking supplies, and scheduling research cases. Ensures work areas are clean and stocked. Other duties as assigned.
Education: High School Diploma or GED required. Associate's Degree in veterinary technology or a Bachelor's Degree in a science field is preferred. The person must be willing to be trained to properly handle all species of animals housed within the BRU and be enrolled in the Occupational Health Program of the BRU.
Experience: One year of experience with animals, preferably in a technical field required. Experience working with animals in a critical or chronic care setting is preferred.
Licensure/Certification/Registration: AALAS certification or license as a veterinary technician is preferred.
Physical Requirements: Requires frequent lifting and carrying supplies, equipment, and/or animals weighing over 50 pounds. Frequent standing, data entry, bending and walking also required. Must be able to tolerate unpleasant odors and sights, animal bites and scratches. May also be required to work with biological, chemical and radiation hazards after proper training.
