PAS FINANCIAL COUNSELOR

SUMMARY: Provides a comprehensive set of registration, scheduling, business, financial, and appointment related services.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: Accurately and appropriately schedules and registers patients for all community hospitals utilizing multiple registration platforms and tools, including Epic, McKesson HBO and STAR, FACTS. Collects patient demographic information and verifies patient insurances, completes ABN and co pay collections processes. Also includes the notification and pre-certification of designated procedures with insurance payors. Cross-trained to staff all areas of Patient Access at any facility, including but not limited to Front Desk, Admitting Office, ER registration, Cashier, Pre-registration, verification, pre-certification, scheduling and financial counseling. Identifies and utilizes appropriate reports to contact insurance payers for resolution to accounts that are pending, denied or in the appeal process. May function as a Super User and serve as a resource for training of new team members during the implementation of new processes. Provides exemplary customer service at all times. Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in a related field. Experience may be considered in lieu of degree.

EXPERIENCE: Two years of relevant experience in Patient Access and/or Patient Accounting or a minimum of three (3) years customer service interacting with the public by telephone or in person in a similar role or capacity.

COMPLEXITY OF WORK: Basic PC software application knowledge and ability to use multiple data systems required. Must be able to type 35 wpm. Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology sufficient to understand physician orders or completion of course within 1 year. Must be detail oriented. Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills required. Must be able to multi-task and maintain composure in difficult situations in a fast-paced environment. Demonstrates a positive and professional approach and communicates effectively with customers and team members.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION: Certified Healthcare Access Associate (CHAA), offered through the National Association of Healthcare Access Management (NAHAM) preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Sufficient mobility and strength to move around the department and throughout the facility. Ability to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time. Excessive walking and standing while obtaining patient information when using laptop computer on wheeled device for bedside registration. Ability to lift 25 pounds.
