Assists physician in the preservation and evaluation of organs for transplantation. Assists physician with bench surgery. Participates in organ procurement and transportation. Maintains laboratory environment and supplies. Assists with related research projects.


A. Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of basic anatomy, physiology, chemistry and medical terminology gained through formal schooling or through related technical work in a laboratory or surgical setting. Knowledge of basic arithmetic sufficient to perform job duties. Good interpersonal and verbal communication skills. Ability to work independently. Associates Degree in Allied Health preferred.

B. Required Length and Type of Experience

Minimum one year experience in a health care setting in related technical work involving a laboratory or surgical setting. Functions may be performed by a Perfusionist.

C. Required Licensure, Certification or Registry



1. Prepares equipment, solution and drugs for procurement, preservation and transplantation of organs. When indicated, prepares organs for perfusion. Evaluates the suitability of organs during preservation for transplantation. Monitors the preservation parameter during perfusion preservations by recording pressures, flows and taking samples for other tests.

2. Assists physician with bench surgery.

3. Assists physician with organ procurement. Transports organs out of state or to other local hospitals as required.

4. Ensures cleanliness of preservation and research labs. Stocks and orders supplies as needed. Maintains equipment in labs. May arrange for repairs or replacements.

5. Performs other duties as assigned.

B. Required Physical and Environmental Demands

Manual dexterity to use surgical equipment and to assist with surgical procedures. Normal or corrected vision. Must be able to be on call on a regular basis on weekends and during the week.
